Unless you’ve been living in a cave, on a mountain without any media device, speaking and listening to no-one, you’ll be aware of the growing trend towards expressing kindness to all living beings. The stories of paying it forward, of creating amazingly supportive and caring communities. Social media is bombarded with people taking extraordinary action to raise money for charity and standing up for what’s ‘right’ and moral and promoting new ideas and ways to make our world a better place to live

But there also seems to be a problem. Rules and regulations seem to be working very hard to stop this happening. This is what I mean (and what I have experienced).

Car parking – no longer can you gift another ‘parker’ the remaining time on your ticket due to the ‘new and improved’ parking machines that insist on your registration number before granting you your ticket

Helping an event organiser clear up – Health and Safety! If you’ve not had training to carry yoga mats/pillows/cups/leftover cake etc then they can’t take the chance of you injuring yourself and suing them

Paying for someone’s tea/coffee in advance as a random act of kindness – Nope, can’t do it as management say it messes up the till (really????)

Being a conscientious driver (and hoping for a reduction in insurance) – apparently you can be penalised for not having an accident as you are now ‘due’ one so the premium increases!!!!

Organising fun events for people who work at the same company as you – Oh the reasons that come from the management team! Everything from health and safety to loss of productivity to inappropriate behaviour (ie having fun at work) to potential of feelings of intimidation for people not wanting to join in (yes, OK I get some of those in the extreme but nothing that can’t be successfully managed surely)

But even with the rules and regulations, health and safety gone mad, coming from places of fear and lack, I still believe in the power each and every one of us has to make the world a better place. And that by continuing our efforts to express kindness, support one another, to do the right thing, we really can make the world a better place.

What are your thoughts? What do you already do or want to do to make the world a better place?
